Health and Happiness Is A Choice

The other day I was listening to the radio and a couple whose son had been murdered was being interviewed. Among other things they were asked if they have forgiven the person who murdered their son.

They both said they have, not for benefit of the murderer but for their own benefit. They completely believed that happiness is a choice as is learned helplessness.

They had made a connection between health and happiness . They felt that holding a grudge or hating the murderer was like them drinking poison and expecting the murderer to die.

They said they had made a decision to make their lives as happy as possible despite losing their son. They had embraced learned optimism completely.

Health and Happiness

This also emphasized how living a happy, resilient and optimistic life is good for your health. How life happiness or making the choice to be happy actually protects you from the stresses of life. Many of us are aware of how many diseases like heart disease, cancer and stroke are all linked to stress.

I have to admit that my decision to chose happiness has not be tested to the extent the mentioned couples which is which is why I drew so much inspiration from their altitude to life.

I am now more convinced that even if I find myself in an unbearable situation I can always find solace in the knowledge if I choose happiness I will come out stronger.

I know from my own experience the importance of supporting social networks or relationships. It is important that you surround yourself with people who are not going to bring negative energy to you.

It is amazing that when you chose happiness things, you start to see how fleeting most situations are.

You start seeing that happiness can be actually found in everyone, everywhere and all the time. You just have to firmly believe and accept that happiness is a choice - a win-win choice, I might add – there is no downside to it. It is the best way to make your life more wonderful and also healthier. The choice is simple really, choose to be happy.

Ways To Do This –
1. Gratitude

Isn't it interesting that we have a lot say when things are going badly but not the other way round. You will be amazed how much your life would change if you were as vocal and passionate about letting people know about what is going well in your life.

You will find that being grateful is a great attitude. Every day you have a lot be grateful for. Just the fact that you are alive today, reading this is something to be grateful for. Always give thanks for those things that go well in your life.

You will find that things are actually going well the majority of the time but you keep quiet about time. You only complain when they are not. Another plus about being grateful is that it then creates and energy which they attracts more of the things you like.

2. Find A Reason To Laugh

When you accept that happiness is a choice and you exercise that choice, smiling and laughing coming along as well.

I find that when I make a mistake and choose to laugh about it or even better tell my teenage twins about it, laughing heartily everyday is easy. As the saying goes -'Laughter is the best medicine'.

3. Be Yourself

There is a reason you have the feelings you have. So learn to express them.

I was never an expressive person but I made the decision to be express my feelings, affections, friendships and passions to people around me. I only wish I had done it sooner because what I have got back has been more than I could have imagined.

Remember pent up anger, frustrations, is bad for your health. So even when things are not quite as you would like them to be, find a way to express your feelings in a way that will not cause hurt to anyone but most importantly to yourself.

"Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." (Abraham Lincoln). So make health and happiness as your choice today and learn to follow the above simple rules. You are sure to have certain success.
